ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection) and PICSI (physiological intracytoplasmic sperm injection) are advanced techniques used in IVF (in vitro fertilization) to improve the chances of successful fertilization and pregnancy. At our IVF clinic, we offer these cutting-edge techniques to our patients to help them achieve their dream of starting a family.
What is ICSI?
ICSI is an advanced technique used in cases where traditional IVF may not be successful due to male factor infertility. In traditional IVF, the sperm and egg are mixed in a dish and allowed to fertilize on their own. However, in cases where the male partner has low sperm count or poor sperm motility, this method may not be successful. With ICSI, a single sperm is injected directly into the egg using a very fine needle. This allows for fertilization to occur even in cases where there are very few viable sperm. ICSI has revolutionized the field of IVF, offering hope to couples who may not have been able to conceive using traditional IVF.
What is PICSI?
PICSI is a newer technique that is used to select the healthiest sperm for use in ICSI. With traditional ICSI, the sperm are selected based on their appearance and motility. However, appearance and motility do not necessarily correlate with the health of the sperm. With PICSI, the sperm are selected based on their ability to bind to a specific substance found on the surface of the egg. This substance is only present on the surface of healthy, viable sperm, and so the selection process helps to ensure that only the healthiest sperm are used for fertilization.
