Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET) is a widely-used technique in IVF (in vitro fertilization) treatments, which involves freezing embryos that are not transferred during a fresh IVF cycle, and using them in a subsequent cycle. At our IVF clinic, we have helped many couples conceive through the use of FET. This process offers a number of advantages over fresh embryo transfer, including greater flexibility in scheduling, the ability to maximize the chances of pregnancy by allowing time for the uterus to return to its natural state after the first cycle, and the potential for multiple attempts to achieve pregnancy.
How Does Frozen Embryo Transfer Work?
The process of FET typically begins with the initial steps of a fresh IVF cycle, including ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval, and fertilization in the laboratory. Embryos are then monitored for a few days, and the most viable embryos are selected for transfer to the uterus. Any remaining embryos that meet the criteria for freezing will be carefully preserved using a process called vitrification, which involves the use of very low temperatures to freeze the embryos rapidly. Once frozen, the embryos can be stored for years until the couple is ready to attempt another IVF cycle. When the time comes for a subsequent IVF cycle, the patient’s menstrual cycle will be closely monitored, and medication will be prescribed to help prepare the uterus for implantation. The frozen embryos will then be thawed and transferred to the uterus using a thin catheter, much like in a fresh embryo transfer. Patients may continue taking medication for a few weeks following the transfer to support the pregnancy.
Is FET Right for You?
Frozen Embryo Transfer may be a good option for couples who have already undergone a fresh IVF cycle and have remaining embryos. It may also be a good choice for those who want to space out their attempts at pregnancy, or who have a specific medical condition that requires them to delay the transfer of the embryos. The decision to use FET will depend on your individual circumstances, and should be discussed with your fertility specialist. At our clinic, we will work closely with you to determine the best course of action for your particular situation, and to provide the support and care you need throughout the IVF process.
